Rapid Policy Update: United States of America applies Tariffs on Canadian Steel and Aluminum, Canada Retaliates

As of Midnight, June 1st, 2018, President Donald Trump and the United States Government has applied a 25% Tariff on Canadian Steel and 10% on Canadian Aluminum. This tariff is an implementation of a section 232 investigation that was extensively covered in March 2018, with significant advocacy and negotiation efforts from the Chamber network, industries on both sides of the border and Canadian Government leading to a temporary exemption for Canada, European Union and other United States allies.

Rapid Policy Update: Federal Government investments to strengthen Canada’s Trade Enforcement Capabilities, Steel & Aluminum Industries

April 26th, 2018, Hamilton, ON: Earlier today, the Federal Government announced an increase in funding for the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Global Affairs Canada to further strengthen Canada’s trade enforcement. The new funding – more than $30 million over five years, starting immediately, and $6.8 million per year after that – will mean more than 40 new officers to investigate trade-related complaints, including those related to steel and aluminum.

Thursday, March 8th, 2018: At 3:30 PM (ET), President Donald Trump signed an executive order, putting into place global tariffs of 25% on Steel and 10% on Aluminum Imports. These Tariffs were the outcome of a Section 232 of the US Trade Act investigation initiated by President Trump last year.

February 20th, 2018, Hamilton, ON: The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce is concerned about the implications of the United States Department of Commerce’s recommendations to President Trump, under a NAFTA Section 232 investigation requested by President Trump in April 2017, concerning the Steel and Aluminum Industries. The law allows the president to unilaterally impose Tariff taxes and other restrictions on imports for reasons of national security, breaking from any existing trade protocols under NAFTA or World Trade Organization.
