Hamilton Chamber to Roll-Out Free Rapid Tests to SMEs in Hamilton

MAY 7, 2021 – HAMILTON: Today, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Ontario and Canadian governments, launched the COVID-19 Rapid Screening Initiative. Through this initiative, test kits will be distributed through participating local chambers of commerce and boards of trade in Ontario – including the Hamilton Chamber – to small- to medium-sized employers (SMEs).

2021 Provincial Budget – Ontario’s Action Plan: Protecting People’s Health and Our Economy

On March 24, the Minister of Finance and President of the Treasury Board, Peter Bethlenfalvy, released Ontario’s Action Plan: Protecting People’s Health and Our Economy. The 2021 Budget is the next phase of Ontario’s response to COVID-19 and is the second Budget the government has delivered during the pandemic.

The 2021 Budget builds on the government’s record investments in response to the global pandemic, bringing total investments to $16.3 billion to protect people’s health and $23.3 billion to protect our economy.

Ontario Chamber of Commerce Releases 2021 Ontario Economic Report

On January 28, 2021, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) released the fifth annual Ontario Economic Report (OER) detailing the experiences and confidence levels of Ontario businesses based on data collected through multiple surveys conducted over the past several months.

According to the OER, Ontario witnessed a steep decline in real GDP growth (-5.6 percent) in 2020 but is projected to see a moderate rebound of 4.8 percent in 2021, fuelled largely in part by expectations for vaccination rollout and the eventual re-opening of the economy.

Rapid Policy Update: United States of America applies Tariffs on Canadian Steel and Aluminum, Canada Retaliates

As of Midnight, June 1st, 2018, President Donald Trump and the United States Government has applied a 25% Tariff on Canadian Steel and 10% on Canadian Aluminum. This tariff is an implementation of a section 232 investigation that was extensively covered in March 2018, with significant advocacy and negotiation efforts from the Chamber network, industries on both sides of the border and Canadian Government leading to a temporary exemption for Canada, European Union and other United States allies.
