· by Huzaifa Saeed

Monday, May 23rd, 2017, Hamilton, ON: The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce is are launching a survey to collect the concerns and recommendations of the Canadian Steel Industry, and related manufacturing industries within the supply chain.

Background: The Canadian steel producers create over 22,000 direct and more than 100,000 indirect jobs through nineteen facilities across five provinces, with over $14 billion in annual sales. The industry also supports numerous manufacturing industries like automotive, aerospace and natural resources. This survey is a component of an advocacy initiative that began last year. The original focus was to support the long-term prosperity of the steel industry by foreign steel dumping, regulatory reform, and a national strategy. More recently, there is a growing concern around the United States government and their intent to implement “Buy America” policies, pursue trade barriers, other unfair market practices. Our next engagement will be a presentation to the All Parliamentary Steel Caucus of the Government of Canada in Ottawa on May 31st, 2017

This survey is a component of an advocacy initiative that began last year in partnership with the Windsor-Essex and Sault Ste. Marie Chambers of Commerce. The original focus was to support the long-term prosperity of the steel industry by foreign steel dumping, regulatory reform, and a national strategy. More recently, there is a growing concern around the United States government and their intent to implement “Buy America” policies, pursue trade barriers, other unfair market practices.

On May 18th, 2017, President Donald Trump also formally initiated a 90 Day notice of his Government’s intention to re-open negotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), giving additional urgency to our efforts towards engaging the business community.

Our next engagement will be a presentation to the All Parliamentary Steel Caucus of the Government of Canada in Ottawa on May 31st, 2017. Over the summer we will work closely with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Canadian Government officials to ensure consultations.

We will be reviewing responses till May 31st at 12 pm. For more information please contact, Policy & Research Analyst, Huzaifa Saeed at h.saeed@hamiltonchamber.ca or 905-522-1151 ext: 230
